Fergie to perform free for Final Four

Pop star Fergie, hard-rock band Staind and melodic singer-songwriter Gavin DeGraw will lead a lineup of national and local artists in a free series of concerts on the riverfront April 3-5, the NCAA will announce today.

They're part of the Big Dance, the entertainment component of the annual college basketball championship, which will be played up the road at Ford Field. The two semifinal games on April 4 will be shown on a giant video screen at the outdoor fest.

Also on the bill are dance-pop group Pussycat Dolls and colorful rappers Gym Class Heroes. "American Idol" host Ryan Seacrest will emcee the April 5 show.

Additional music acts will be announced in coming days, said Jon Witz, local producer for the NCAA-run event. They'll include about 40 local artists playing on two stages -- a first for the event.

The Big Dance is among a flurry of Final Four-affiliated activities scheduled for that weekend, including NCAA Hoop City, an interactive sports fest at Cobo Center.

The concerts will give Detroit another taste of the party hoopla that descended on the city in 2006, when the Super Bowl drew an array of celebrities and shows. All 72,000 tickets for the Ford Field games are long sold out.

"This is a way to enjoy a big-time event without necessarily having a ticket to the game," said Witz.
This is the seventh year for the Big Dance, which has featured such performers as Taylor Swift, Kid Rock and Ludacris.
